How much gravel do I need?
Gravel is ordered by the cubic yard or ton. Formula: length × width × depth (in feet). For a 12 × 12 ft area at 3 inches: 12 × 12 × 0.25 = 36 cu ft = 1.33 cubic yards ≈ 2 tons of crushed stone.
Gravel depth guide
| Use | Depth |
|---|---|
| Walking path | 2 inches |
| Driveway (single layer) | 3 inches |
| Driveway (base + top) | 6-8 inches total |
| Paver base | 4-6 inches |
Bags vs. bulk gravel
Bags (0.5 cu ft) are fine for small repairs. For anything over a few square feet, order bulk gravel by the yard — typically $30-60 per ton delivered, versus $5-8 per bag.
