Backsplash Tile Calculator – How Many Tiles Do I Need? | CalcLoft
Find out exactly how many backsplash tiles you need for your kitchen — by countertop run and height, for subway, square and large-format tiles.
How to measure a backsplash
To find the area of a backsplash, multiply the length of the countertop run by the height of the tiled area. Keep the run in feet and the height in inches:
Area (sq ft) = countertop length (ft) × backsplash height (in) ÷ 12
For example, a 12 ft run with an 18 in tall backsplash covers 12 × 18 ÷ 12 = 18 sq ft of wall. A 3 × 6 in subway tile covers 0.125 sq ft, so the area takes 144 tiles — about 159 tiles with a 10% waste allowance. Buy 160 or more.
Backsplash tile counts at a glance
Quick estimates for a standard 18 in tall backsplash, rounded up to a whole tile and including 10% waste:
| Countertop run | Wall area | 3 × 6 in tiles | 4 × 4 in tiles | 6 × 6 in tiles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 12 sq ft | 106 | 119 | 53 |
| 10 ft | 15 sq ft | 132 | 149 | 66 |
| 12 ft | 18 sq ft | 159 | 179 | 80 |
| 15 ft | 22.5 sq ft | 198 | 223 | 99 |
Counts use a 10% waste allowance: area × 1.1 ÷ tile area, rounded up. Add a little more for outlets, corners, a busy pattern or a diagonal layout.

Backsplash tile calculator FAQ
What height is a standard kitchen backsplash?
The standard backsplash is 18 inches tall — the space between the countertop and the bottom of most upper cabinets. Behind a cooktop or range it often goes up to 24 inches for easier cleaning and a bolder look.
How much extra tile should I buy?
Start with at least 10% extra. It covers cuts at corners, outlets and edges, plus breakage and future repairs. Go up to 15–20% for busy patterns, diagonal layouts or uneven walls.
How many 3 × 6 subway tiles for a 12 ft backsplash?
A 12 ft run at the standard 18 in height covers 18 sq ft. Each 3 × 6 in tile covers 0.125 sq ft, so the area takes 144 tiles — about 159 tiles with a 10% waste allowance. Buy 160 or more.
