How many chain link fence materials do I need?

A straight chain link run needs four main materials: fabric mesh, line posts, terminal (end) posts and top rails. Estimate them like this:

Mesh rolls = run length ÷ 50 ft, rounded up — standard residential chain link fabric comes in 50 ft rolls.

Posts = run ÷ 10 ft, rounded up, plus both ends — line posts go every 10 ft on center, with a terminal post at each end. Each walk gate adds two more terminal posts, but the gate opening itself takes no mesh.

Top rails = run ÷ 10 ft, rounded up — one 10 ft rail bay per post spacing. Rails are often sold as 10 ft or 21 ft sticks, so buy the fewest sticks that cover the same total length.

For a 150 ft, 6 ft high run you need 3 rolls of mesh, 16 posts and 15 top rail sections. Adding one 4 ft walk gate keeps the mesh at 3 rolls but raises the post count to 18.

Line posts vs terminal posts

Line posts (usually 1-5/8 in for residential fence) carry the mesh and sit 10 ft on center. Terminal posts (2-3/8 in or heavier) go at both ends of the run, at every corner and on both sides of each gate. If your fence turns a corner, add one extra terminal post per corner — the calculator above assumes a straight run with two ends.

Chain link fence calculator FAQ

How far apart should chain link fence posts be?

Line posts go 10 ft on center for residential chain link fence. Terminal posts go at both ends of the run, at every corner and on both sides of a gate opening.

How long is a roll of chain link fence fabric?

Standard residential rolls are 50 ft long and come in 4, 5 and 6 ft heights. Some commercial fabric is sold in longer rolls — if your supplier carries them, one roll can span more than the 50 ft the calculator assumes.

Do gate posts need to be special?

Yes. The calculator adds two extra terminal posts when you include a gate. Gate posts carry the hinges and latch, so use heavier 2-3/8 in (or schedule 40) posts set in concrete. The gate opening itself needs no mesh — only the top rail typically crosses above it.
