How to measure a garden bed for edging

Edging follows the outside of your bed, so what you actually need is the perimeter — the total distance around it. For a rectangular bed, add the length of all four sides:

Perimeter = (length + width) × 2

For example, a 20 × 10 ft bed has (20 + 10) × 2 = 60 ft of edge. Then add your waste allowance for cuts, joints and curves:

Edging to buy = perimeter × (1 + waste %)

Finally divide by the section length and round up. With a 5% allowance and 6 ft sections, that 20 × 10 ft bed needs 63 ft of edging, which is 11 pieces.

How much edging for a 10x10 garden bed?

A square 10 × 10 ft bed has a 40 ft perimeter. With the default 5% extra that is 42 ft, so you need about 7 pieces of 6 ft edging (six full pieces plus one cut). Use the calculator above to check your exact bed — it handles round and irregular shapes too.

Landscape edging calculator FAQ

How do I measure an irregular or curved bed?

Lay a flexible tape, a rope or a measuring wheel right along the edge of the bed and read the total length. Add a couple of extra feet for dips and tight curves, then pick "Free-form" and enter that number directly.

What about a round flower bed?

Either measure the diameter straight across the middle and choose "Round" — the calculator uses π × diameter — or measure the distance all the way around the circle and enter it as a free-form length.

Do I really need the 5% extra?

Yes. Edging gets cut at corners, trimmed at joints and needs a little slack to follow curves. 5% covers most beds; for heavily curved or odd-shaped borders, raise it to 10%.
