How much carpet do I need?
Carpet is priced by the square foot but often ordered in square yards (1 sq yd = 9 sq ft). For a 12 × 12 room: 144 sq ft × 1.10 waste = 158 sq ft ≈ 17.6 square yards.
Carpet rolls and seams
Standard carpet rolls are 12 feet wide. Rooms wider than the roll need a seam — which increases waste and cost. Our calculator's waste allowance covers typical seam cuts; for wide or odd rooms, use 15%.
